As a deep-chested breed, Black and Tan Coonhounds are more likely to experience Bloat (GDV), a life-threatening condition where the stomach twists. Owners should manage feeding routines carefully and avoid vigorous exercise immediately after meals. Their long, velvety ears are prone to trapping moisture and debris, which can lead to yeast or bacterial infections—regular cleaning is a must. They are predisposed to 'hound odor,' a natural oily scent that some find strong, though regular bathing helps. Prospective owners must be prepared for the 'Coonhound Bay'; they are very vocal and their deep, booming voice can carry for kilometers, which might not suit close-proximity neighbors. They also possess an intense scent drive; if they pick up a trail, they can become 'nose-blind' to commands, making a secure yard and leash safety essential. While they are independent thinkers, this trait is balanced by their profound devotion to their people once the workday is done. Like many large breeds, they are more likely to develop hip dysplasia, so keeping them at a lean, healthy weight is critical to joint longevity. They can also be prone to digestive sensitivities on high-grain diets, often thriving much better on a fresh, species-appropriate raw diet.
