About the Poodle (Standard)

The Standard Poodle is the original of the three Poodle varieties, standing as a testament to canine intelligence and athletic versatility. Far from the 'frou-frou' stereotype, this breed was developed as a rugged water retriever, capable of swimming in cold European waters to fetch waterfowl. This heritage is reflected in their webbed feet and water-resistant coat. They are renowned for their 'human-like' intelligence, often ranked as the second smartest dog breed globally, making them exceptionally responsive to training and complex tasks. In a home environment, the Standard Poodle is a devoted companion that thrives on being part of family activities. They possess a unique blend of dignity and playfulness, often described as having a 'sense of humor.' Their non-shedding, hypoallergenic coat makes them a popular choice for families with allergies, though it requires significant maintenance. Physically robust and mentally sharp, they require a lifestyle that offers both physical exercise and cognitive challenges to prevent boredom-induced behaviors.

Breed Standard

Key characteristics from the breed standard

In the show ring, the Standard Poodle is a master of presence, carrying itself with an unmistakable air of distinction and 'noblesse.' The breed standard demands a square build and a springy, effortless gait that covers ground with light-footed grace. Their sculptural silhouette, enhanced by traditional clips like the Continental, highlights a straight topline and a high-set tail.

In Australia

Standard Poodles were introduced to Australia in the late 1800s, with documented show appearances in Melbourne and Sydney during that era, as noted by the Poodle Club of Victoria.

Things to Consider

Every breed has its quirks — here's what to know

Standard Poodles are more likely to experience Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (Bloat) due to their deep-chested conformation; this means owners should avoid vigorous exercise for one hour before and after meals and consider multiple small feedings. Their ears are prone to trapping moisture and wax because of hair growth inside the canal, which can lead to yeast infections; regular cleaning and plucking are essential maintenance. Their high intelligence is a double-edged sword—if not mentally stimulated with puzzles or training, they may find their own (often destructive) ways to stay busy. Standard Poodles can also be prone to separation anxiety if left alone for long periods, as they are very people-oriented. While they are famously 'non-shedding,' their hair grows continuously and will mat painfully against the skin if not brushed daily to the root. Many Poodles are more likely to develop digestive sensitivities or skin allergies on standard commercial kibbles containing fillers, but they often thrive on a grain-free, fresh-protein diet like those provided by Majestik. These characteristics are simply part of their sophisticated nature, and with the right routine, they are exceptionally rewarding partners.

Feeding Guide for Your Poodle (Standard)

Healthy Weight

20-32 kg

Daily Feeding Amount (general starting estimate)

500-950 grams per day

For an active Standard Poodle, a fresh or raw diet should focus on high-quality lean proteins. Based on an average adult weight of 25kg, an intake of 2.5% of body weight (625g) is a standard starting point. Majestik Pet Food options like Kangaroo or Beef provide excellent lean protein. Split daily intake into two or more smaller meals to mitigate the risk of bloat, and ensure food is served at room temperature.

Feeding quantities are general starting estimates only. Individual needs vary with body condition, weight trends, age, health and activity. Ingredient percentages alone do not guarantee complete and balanced nutrition — consult a veterinarian for individualised dietary guidance.

Ingredient percentages alone do not guarantee complete and balanced nutrition. Seek veterinary or qualified canine nutrition guidance for individualised dietary advice. Raw feeding, specific proteins or fresh foods should not be presented as preventing, treating or managing breed health conditions without veterinary diagnosis and supervision.

Majestik's Recommended Feeding Approach

Breed Diet Notes

Some owners use smaller divided meals and avoid strenuous activity immediately around feeding. These steps cannot guarantee prevention of gastric dilatation-volvulus. Seek urgent veterinary care if bloat is suspected. Fresh, raw diets are often preferred for digestibility.

Standard Poodles can be predisposed to sensitive digestion, so incorporating high-quality fiber from pureed pumpkin or leafy greens is beneficial. Due to their deep chests, avoid large gulps of air during feeding by using slow feeders or shallow bowls. Ensure adequate Omega-3 fatty acids from fish to support skin and coat health.

These are general breed-level notes only. The appropriate food and serving amount depend on the individual dog's age, health, body condition, activity and tolerance.

Majestik Recommendation

Our Beef, Lamb and Roo BARF meals provide convenient fresh-food options, with suitable proteins chosen or rotated according to the individual dog.
