Polish Lowland Sheepdog

The Polish Lowland Sheepdog is a wonderful companion, but their thick double coat is a significant commitment; without frequent brushing, the hair can form painful mats close to the skin, which may lead to hot spots or acute moist dermatitis—keeping them well-groomed is a labor of love that ensures their comfort. They are more likely to experience ear infections due to the heavy, hair-covered ears trapping moisture and yeast, so a quick weekly ear check and clean is a helpful routine. As a herding breed, they can be predisposed to barking at perceived intruders or movement, making them excellent watchdogs, though they may need guidance on when to 'quiet down' in suburban settings. They are also known for being quite food-motivated and are more likely to develop obesity if their caloric intake isn't monitored closely—a healthy weight is easily maintained with a high-protein, low-carb fresh diet. Additionally, their intelligence means they can be independent or even stubborn; they thrive with owners who provide clear boundaries and plenty of mental 'jobs' to prevent boredom-based digging or chewing. Like many active breeds, they can be susceptible to hip dysplasia, so keeping them at a lean weight and avoiding high-impact jumping during their puppy growth phase is a wise preventative measure.
